The Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia

Pictures courteousy of Portside Whitsunday

The beautiful, magical Whitsunday Passage (a true favourite of auinfo) runs between the Queensland Coastal towns of Bowen, Airlie Beach, Ball Bay and Mackay and some 80 or so Islands. Some islands are habitated with varying degrees of settlement. The region has much to offer with perhaps The Great Barrier Reef being the biggest attraction.

Several of the more well known islands are uniquely established as tourist resorts eg Hamilton Island , Lindeman Island, Hayman Island, South Molle Island.

The Whitsunday Mainland-The Best of Both Worlds

The Whitsunday mainland also offers similar resort developments with perhaps Airlie Beach being the most established. The mainland does have the advantage of offering the best of both Worlds as a holiday here offers both Island like and Mainland experiences with access to The Great Barrier Reef, excursions to one or more of  the islands, golf courses, a host of water sports, bushwalking or lounging on the beach. Getting there is also somewhat cheaper and simpler as flights go to the nearby Prosperine or of course one can simply drive.

Beautiful Whitsunday Beaches

With the close proximity to The Great Barrier Reef, there is no doubt that The Whitsundays (both the mainland and the Islands) offer a unique holiday experience and are growing in stature as 'Must See' places in Australia

To the south of The Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Region is yhe Capricorn Region. The Capricorn Region is famous for its former precious stone production which included sapphires and emeralds. Clues to this past lie in some of the regional town names such as Emerald and Sapphire. Although large scale operations have long gone it is still possible to tour walk in mines or indulge in 'fossicking', for example at Rubyvale, with the hope of discovering a hidden gem.

There are many beautiful National Parks in the region with lush rainforests, tranquil pools, gorges, streams, waterfalls and age-old rock paintings. Rockhampton is 400 miles north of Brisbane.
