Swan Hill Overview
Swan Hill, named by the explorer who observed Black Swans, is a modest town on the New South Wales, Victoria border.
Paddle steamers depart from this port and meander down the tree-lined Murray River to Echuca (home of the waters).
Echuca
Echuca has restored old hotels and government buildings and is immensely proud of its magnificent Red Gun Wharf.
It cherishes its once thriving riverboat era.
The early 1900's saw the dawning of modern transportation and commuting by river was no longer practical.
Today paddle steamers reign proudly in the waters, cruising steadily, taking tourists on a voyage of discovery down the mighty Murray.
An old iron bridge joins Echuca to its sister town in NSW directly across the Murray called Moana (home of the dead).
Further East is the town of Shepparton, called in honour of an Early Irish settler, which began as a river crossing location in the 1850's.
Charlton is a supply centre for wheat and is set on the banks of the river Avoca.
Climb the smallest mountain in the world at 43 metres high, Mt Wycheproof.
