Launceston is 120 miles north of Hobart and is situated in (almost English style) rolling countryside at the tip of the Tamar River. This lush city, located at the junction of three rivers including The Tamar, which connects to Bass Straight, has a charming heritage character born out of its well preserved buildings and extensive parks and gardens. Launceston is located on the northern side of the island of Tasmania. see map.
Several picturesque bridges traverse the rivers and boat cruises up the Tamar River and Cataract Gorge offer magnificent views. In addition a cable car ride makes a unique and memorable way to cross the beautiful gorge.
Cataract Gorge Reserve is only a 15 minute walk from the centre of Launceston and is a must if you are visiting the city; (look out for Penny Royal World which is a replica gun powder mill which is viewed on a unique boat ride and culminates in the firing of cannons!) Another popular way to view the gorge is on The Lady Stelfox paddle steamer which cruises up to the reserve from Launceston Harbour.
The city, and Tasmania as a whole, have a well deserved culinary reputation as well as being home to one of Australia's best breweries, established by a Scottish brewer. Wine is also made in the area and both the winery and the brewery can be toured and the product purchased and sampled. Many original buildings have been converted to provide delightful and stylish accommodation.
Launceston has hotels in waterside and city locations. Click here for full list of Launceston Hotels. Hotels in some popular regions of Launceston are listed below for your convenience.
