Grampians Overview
The Grampians are named after the mountain range in Scotland due to their resemblance, as seen through the eyes of the Scottish explorer, Major Mitchell who climbed them in 1836.
The Grampians are located in the mid west of Victoria and the wild sandstone formations form the western extremity of the Great Dividing Range.
Wildlife
Some of the peaks stretch to 1000 metres and there are around 1000 different species of native plants known to be growing in the region.
The landscape is painted in a fauna of beautiful colours when in bloom, and wildlife roam freely in their natural habitat.
This is a truly beautiful area, where roads lead to picturesque lakes and inlets of immense beauty.
The Grampians have also been featured on a popular top rating holiday television show in Australia on an episode of the BBC (UK) Holiday programme. In both cases the accommodation selected was Boroka Downs .
Lakes, Walks, Waterfalls and Wineries
Lake Bellfield is popular for sailing and rowing and is also ideal for fishing.
For the more energetic there are plenty of bushwalking trails and rock faces for those who want a vertical climb.
There are majestic waterfalls and lakes; a web of minor roads sprawling their way into the Grampians offer good sightseeing opportunities and provides access into the region.
Halls Gap is a quaint little village lying on the tip of Lake Bellfield and also the location of the very informative visitors information centre and wildlife park.
Grampians wineries are also becoming established and there are over twenty to visit in the area and the Pyrenees region, further east.
Easy Reach of Melbourne
The combination of the majestic beauty of The Grampians National Park, good food and accommodation and the relatively easy access Melbourne, the capital of Victoria make the Grampians an excellent choice for a unique Australian holiday.
