Bairnsdale Overview
Bairnsdale is 170 miles to the east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway so it makes an ideal place to stay if you are on your way to or from Sydney. Alternatively the town is also perfectly situated to explore the unique Gippsland Lakes system which stretches up the coast from Seaspray to Lakes Entrance.
Mitchell River National Park
To the north is The Mitchell River National Park which is popular for, of course, walking and for white water canoeist trying to tame the Mitchell River as it flows to Bairnsdale and then discharges into the Lakes system. The fact that the town is linked via river systems ultimately to Melbourne was exploited by Paddle Boats in their heyday.
Tourism and Leisure
The Port of Bairnsdale has now been developed for tourism and leisure with walking tracks, picnic spots and fishing. Naturally the area is rich in animal and birdlife. As with many towns in Victoria, Bairnsdale has much to see of historical interest whether it is museums, heritage listed houses or on guided walking trails.
