VICTORIA MAP ABOUT HOTELS CAMPING RESTAURANTS
The coastal town of Warrnambool is an ideal stop over or base for a few days after touring the breath taking Great Ocean Road. The residents take pride in their town and this together with its facilities, buildings and attractions have seen Warnambool receive three Victorian 'Premier Town' titles. The town was a former whaling and sealing station and is a fine example of a natural harbour to the Southern Ocean. Tide permitting a penguin colony can be seen at Middle Island and it is claimed that Logans Beach is one of Southern Australia's best whale observation points, migration period permitting. There are exceptional gardens, look out for the Botanic Gardens and the floodlight Fletcher Jones gardens. The town has a rich and sometimes tragic past, many ships were lost off the coast here, and this can be explored on specially designed 'heitage trails' as well as museums and recreations etc. There are several fine beaches and bays in the area plus an adventure park, reserves, art galleries. An usual event occurs in late spring to early summer when baby eels can be seen migrating up Hopkins Falls. Warrnambool is 160 miles west of Melbourne.
