The Hastings River dominates the city which nestles at its mouth as it heads towards the Tasman Sea. Not surprisingly you can indulge in all manner of water based sports and operators offer scuba diving, river, fishing and coastal cruises as well as dolphin watching expeditions. The fishing in the area is varied since there is the challenge of both fresh water and the sea. Other activities include golf, walking, horse and camel riding. The beach is a good walking distance from the city centre, past highly coloured painted boulders which line part of the river side promenade. Since Port Maquarie is a former convict settlement there is plenty to see of historical interest. There are large areas of natural bush and rainforest if you enjoy walking. Several nearby wineries offer tours and perhaps more importantly tastings! There are no shortage of resorts, hotels, fun parks and eating places since the city is a popular and busteling NSW holiday spot.
