Although not a tourist area North Ryde is of interest because of its growing reputation as the hi tech centre for New South Wales if not Australia. It is already dubbed' Silicon Ryde' which is perhaps a justifiable tag due to the status of some of its resident companies. Here you will find Australian head quarters for the likes of Microsoft, Siemens, Canon, Sony, Oracle, Toshiba, Gateway, Oracle, Kodak, Resmed, Ericsson and Hitachi. This expanding suburb has many gleaming modern offices, set in leafy and well groomed surroundings. The modern and expanding Macquarie University is set on the fringes of North Ryde and reinforces the hi tech aura. The area's focal point is the Maquarie Centre which is a well appointed, recently expanded, shopping centre complete with ice rink, multi screen cinema and the new Loft section which is a welcome addition. There are several hotels in the vicinity and this is a good area in which to base yourself away from the city centre. Sydney CBD is only a 30 minute drive down the Epping Road.
