The town of Mount Beauty is nestled at the base of Mt Bogong, the highest peek in Victoria. It was originally established in the 1940's as a town ship for the workers of the ambitious Kiewa Hydro Electric project . The reservoir which tames the Kiewa river is a man made marvel and the visitors centre will provide an insight into this engineering triumph which is celebrated in Australian folklore. Mount Beauty is an ideal place to stay if you are either skiing in winter at the nearby Falls Creek or when the snow melts mountain biking, fishing and trekking in the Bogong High Plains and surrounds. Nearby is the town of Bright which is another good base for skiing in winter and mountain biking, walking, horse riding and fishing throughout the remainder of the year. Situated in its valley, the Ovens River flows through the town and provides an interesting feature to this attractive town. Mount Beauty and Bright are located 200 miles north east of Melbourne.
