Launceston is 120 miles north of Hobart and is situated in almost English style rolling countryside at the tip of the Tamar River. This lush city, located at the junction of three rivers including The Tamar, which connects to Bass Straight, has a charming heritage character born out of its well preserved buildings and extensive parks and gardens. Several picturesque bridges traverse the rivers and boat cruises up the Tamar River and Catarct Gorge offer magnificent views. In addition a cable car ride makes a unique and memorable way to cross the beautiful gorge. The city, and Tasmania as a whole, have a well deserved culinary reputation as well as being home to one of Australia's best breweries, established by a Scottish brewer. Wine is also made in the area and both the winery and the brewery can be toured and the product purchased and sampled. Many original buildings have been converted to provide delightful and stylish accommodation.
