The Hunter
region extends from its capital Newcastle to
Port Stephens and inland to Merriwa and Murrurundi, which border the
Upper Hunter region. As Newcastle is Australia's second oldest city it has all
the amenities and attractions one would expect of a major population centre.
Inland and to the north is the plateau of Barrington Tops, which attains World
Heritage status because of its diverse range of fauna and vegetation. Here you
can explore rain and eucalyptus forest and spot rare native Australian animals
and birds. There are several award-winning hotels that offer stunning
accommodation and views. The Hunter Valley produces some of the finest wines in
Australia, if not the finest wines in the world. With over seventy wineries to
explore it is undoubtedly a win lovers paradise. You will find some familiar
producers, which export their wine worldwide, as well as smaller lesser-known
'boutique' wineries. Many of the vineyards have developed well appointed resort
style hotels offering winery tours and the all-important tasting. The principal
towns in the wine region are Cessnock, Wollombi, Singleton and Maitland. The
Hunter is a two to three hour drive of Sydney
