The Goldfields region is named after the spectacular
goldrush of the 1850's. Prospectors made vast gold finds, which generated tremendous wealth and prosperity for the region.
The cities of Ballarat and Bendigo became, and are still, lavishly appointed in a manner typical of the day with ornate gardens,
stately buildings, statues, fountains and civic centres. The population increased markedly and many towns in the region benefited
from the free flowing affluence. Over time the gold became exhausted and gradually more stable longer-term industry replaced gold
as it lost its influence and the mining companies moved away. Other towns in the area include Daylesford, Castlemaine , Maldon,
Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Avoca. Many examples of the glory days can be found in the towns as the structures were built
to last. There is still the opportunity to find some as there are numerous opportunities to try gold panning, just for fun!
Accommodation is plentiful in this rewarding and naturally beautiful region. Ballarat is around 60 miles to the west of Melbourne.
