Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, and like the other Australian Capitals, has a wonderful harbour setting. The city has a modern appearance and infrastructure since it was largely rebuilt from the mid 1970's following heavy damage by a severe cyclone. Today there are outside cafes and restaurants, particularly at the Stokes Hill Wharf complex in the redeveloped old harbour and Darwin is renown for its diverse and rich cuisine. 'Aquascene' provides the opportunity to hand feed hundreds of fish as they venture inshore on the tide to feed. This has become one of the most popular tourist attractions and a 'must do'. Unlike southern capitals it could be argued that the best time to visit Darwin is in the Australian winter, from May to August. During this time the rainfall is usually low to nonexistent, however, outside this period particularly in January and February the rainfall can be very heavy. Although Darwin has many beaches to explore real caution should be exercised as dangerous saltwater crocodiles and jelly-fish are prevalent.
