Alice Springs is the location popularly perceived, if not perfectly geographically exact, as the centre of the Australian continent. Since the Northern Territory town has a population approaching 30 000 it is a significant centre, not just a tourist resort in the middle of no-where. However tourism is one of the towns major industries and in support of this there is an excellent infrastructure including an airport, good roads, magnificent golf course, casinos, parks, Botanic Gardens, luxury resorts etc etc which often surprises visitors. The town is laid out around the Todd River, which is dry for much of the year and only flows following heavy rain. The predominant colour in this part of Australia is red, from the sand and dust, which creates an almost Martian feeling. There is much to see of natural beauty from the Macdonnell and James Ranges, Standley Chasm, Kings Canyon, mysterious meteorite craters. The town is also a good base to see the magnificent and awesome Ayres Rock. Alice Springs has a superb selection of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.
