There is nothing further south on mainland Australia than the beautiful Wilsons Promentary national park. This could almost be an island with 80 miles of coastline except for the connection to the mainland at it's north east corner. One main road extends to Tidal River village, which has an information centre, on the promontories east coast. With its rugged granite peaks backing white sand beaches, miles of walking tracks with plenty to see this is not surprisingly one of Victoria's most popular holiday spots. The promontory is teaming with Australian native wildlife, including emus, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras and a host of brightly coloured wild birds. At the south east tip is a lighthouse which can be reached by walking track. Wilsons promentary has a scarcity of accommodation and tourist trappings which is a blessing for those wishing to savour Australian nature at its best. The national park is 150 miles south east of Melbourne and the town of Yanakie is the nearest town, located at its gateway.
