The small town of Mount Magnet lies 350 miles north east of Perth on the Great Northern Highway. The town supports a nearby large open cut gold mine. As with several of the other gold towns in the state there are fascinating reminders of the heady days of the gold rush era which includes many and sometimes treacherous old mine workings. To the north of the town are unusual granite formations which have examples of aboriginal rock paintings.
