The Grampians are so called after the mountain range in Scotland due to their resemblance as seen in the eyes of the explorer Scots born Major Mitchell who climbed them in 1836. The wild sandstone formations form the western extremity of the Great Dividing Range. Some of the peaks stretch to 1000 metres mirrored with 1000 different species of native plants. The landscape is painted in a fauna of beautiful colours when in bloom, and wildlife roam freely in their natural habitat. This is a truly beautiful area, where roads lead to picturesque lakes and inlets of immense beauty. Lake Bellfield is popular for sailing and rowing and is also ideal for fishing. For the more energetic there are plenty of bush walking trails and rock faces for those who want a vertical climb. Halls Gap, a quaint little village, lies on the tip of Lake Bellfield and has a web of minor roads sprawling their way into the Grampians.
