The town is located at the entrance of the Tamar River and The Bass Straight, in an extensive forested areas. George Town is also the base for some of Tasmania's heavy industry and this combined with its proximity to the mainland has made it a significant commercial region. There is a good range of accommodation here and the town makes an excellent stop over for ferry passengers to and from the mainland. There are several nearby wineries in the area. Hobart is situated 160 miles to the south and the road following the Tamar River leads the 30 miles to Launceston.
