The Coonawara is a region renowned for its wineries in the far South - East, a relatively small eliptical shaped strip of rich volcanic terra rossa soil, close to the border of Victoria. It is an idyllic getaway for connoisseurs of good wine and pleasant scenery. It started as a European settlement and the first winery was built in 1893, however, demand was poor and the industry suffered until it was triumphantly revived in the 1960's. The Coonawarra is now recoginised as an important wine growing area and boasts that it produces Australia's greatest cabernet sauvignon. There is an assortment of acclaimed wineries in the region with more than 20 cellar doors, however, Coonawarra remains an unpretentious hamlet. Venturing further north is the charming town of Naracoorte (place of running water). A World Heritage Listed site of 60 incredible limestone caves some containing the fossils of giant kangaroos and marsupial lions. In the evening the caves alive with bats, hanging precariously by their feet swooping in the shadow of the night, it truely is an amazing sight.
