Bundaberg, 220 miles north of Brisbane up the Bruce Highway, is most famous for its Rum which is enjoyed world over and a product of local sugar cane production. The fascinating daily tours of the distillery, which includes the opportunity to taste the product in the bar, are, needless to say, extremely popular. The town is the southern most point from which to join excursions to the Great Barrier Reef, The Whitsudays and to several small islands which include Lady Musgrove, Lady Elliot and Fraser Islands. Bundaberg is also ideally placed to view whales during August to October. However from November to March you may also be fortunate to see Giant Turtles at Mon Repos as they make their way up the sand to lay their eggs. The Burnett River, which divides the town, is lined with parks and is popular for a host of water sports and activities. There is much to see and do in the region including a zoo, beautiful beaches, some which allow 4WD access and mysterious 25 million years old craters which are possibly the result of a meteorite impact.
