Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is 600 miles north of Sydney and one if not the fastest growing cities in Australia. Like Sydney and Melbourne water forms the centre piece and offers character and life to the city. Much of the centre is nestled in a bend of the Brisbane River as it lazily meanders to the sea at Moreton Bay. Ferries, water taxis and cruise boats are a popular way to get around or see the city and find your bearings. The South Bank is a popular leisure destination since the site was host to the1988 World Expo. The development has remained as an impressive addition to the cities infrastructure and includes a man made beach. There is an extensive network of riverside walks and board-walks which provide good city views as well as a healthy way to move around. There is a good selection of riverside restaurants and cafes to spend lazy sunny afternoons. Brisbane is a good base from which to explore southern Queensland and has all the attractions of a modern cosmopolitan city; excellent shopping, fine restaurants, all standards of accommodation from back packers to luxury.
