Tenterfield - Casino - Gateway to New England

Casino is situated by the Richmond River and is the centre for the regional beef production. The town has many parks and picnic spots whereas the river offers fishing. Casino is a good example of an Australian country town.

State Forests

Tenterfield has the hills of the Great Dividing Range as a backdrop and is famous for its colourfully vivid autumn leaf displays. Tenterfield region has ten state forests including The Girard, Forestland and Boonoo Boonoo State Forests. The forests are home to native Australian fauna and wildlife including wallabies, kangaroos, koalas and the rare 'Powerful Owl' which is protected in a preserve in the Girard State Forest.

Granite Belt Wineries

Tenterfield is also close to what are known as 'The Granite Belt Wineries' which is a relatively young and up and coming wine region. There are over 30 wine produces including Jester Hill Wines, Felsberg Winery, Ballandean Estate, Whiskey Gully Wines. You will have the chance to tour the wineries as well as taste and purchase the product at the cellar doors.

Boonoo Boonoo and Bluff Rock

Tenterfield is also ideally placed to explore The Boonoo Boonoo National Park, which has a 200 m waterfall which plunges into a gorge and rainforest gully. There are some walking tracks and a viewing platform over the falls.

Also in the area are the Washpool National Parks, and Bluff Rock which is a unique granite rock formation visible from The New England Highway just south of Tenterfield . Forty miles to the west is the Glenlyon Dam which offers fishing and camping. There are a number of historical buildings to visit including the Courthouse, Railway Station, Saddler and Stannum House. There is a good selection of accommodation in the region

Bald Rock

Bald Rock, located in Bald Rock National Park, is the largest granite monolith in the Southern Hemisphere and has similarities with Uluru (Ayers Rock) in The Northern Territory. It measures over 700 metres long, 500 metres wide, is almost 1300 metres above sea level and protrudes over 200m above the surrounding bushland. There are two marked walking tracks to the summit of Bald Rock offering both a leisurely, scenic route or a more arduous climb. From the top of Bald Rock, the views are spectacular and if the conditions are right you can see up into Queensland. Bald Rock National Park is 30 km north of Tenterfield along an unsealed dirt road.

Tenterfield and Casino are on the northern border of New England which offers relaxing scenic drives and plenty of delightful towns to explore.
