Stanley is situated on the north west coast,120 miles north west of Launceston and 220 miles north west of Hobart. The immediate and most striking feature of the village's location is the 'Nut'. This flat topped, cliff faced slab is a rock formation that towers over the town to a height of 150 metres in a similar manner to Edinburgh's Arthur's Seat. It can be explored by foot or cable car. The 'Nut' has a spectacular setting and is surrounded by sea apart from an isthmus which connects to the mainland. Stanley village is located on this strip.
A fishing fleet is based here and to the north of the town is a promontory, tipped by North Head, one of the most northerly point on Tasmania. Stanley has a heritage status and is the winner of many Tasmanian tourism awards.
Tasmania's most westerly town is Marrawah, which is located 153 miles west of Launceston. The town is set in an agriculture setting and is close to Mount Cameron, home of Aboriginal carvings.
