Port Hedland, like Port Pirie in South Australia, is a vital link in Australian commodity production and hence the country's wealth. BHP, the company affectionately known as The Big Australian, has a considerable presence here. The towns port can handle vast ore carriers and there are many other examples of large scale industrial and mining plant.
This industrial might makes an interesting tour and contrasts that other equally important great Australian export seen during a winery visit. The town also has much more to offer since it is a centre for diving, bird spotting and light aircraft excursions. Passing whales can also be seen during the Australian winter months. Port Hedland is 1600 Km (~1000 miles) from Perth and 600 Km (~400 miles) south of Broome on the Great Northern Highway.
Perth, several thousand kilometres to the south of Port Hedland is a popular international tourist destination and its west coast location makes it usually the first or last port of call in Australia. There is no shortage of hotels and tourist accommodation. A selection of Hotels in Perth is shown below. For a full list please visit our Perth Hotels page.
