Port Augusta Overview
Port Augusta is the most northerly South Australian port because it is positioned at the tip of the Spencer Gulf, 190 miles from Adelaide. It is also a good base from which to explore the Eyre Peninsula. Traveling 1903 miles north on the Stuart Highway will take you to Darwin via Alice Springs, through the heart of Australia.
The Flinders Ranges
The surrounding areas of the town from the southerly tip of the Flinders range are quite magnificent. There are walking trails leading past gorges and rugged mountain terrain from Mount Brown to Mount Remarkable, reaching to the Hancocks lookout in Mount Remarkable National Park.
Heritage Buildings
This is an industrial port, a lifeline to the working people of the outback, and it is also serves as a government and commercial centre for the region. The city has retained some of its earlier buildings dating back over 100 years which gives an appreciation of the hardships endured.
