New Norfolk is only a 20 mile drive along the Derwent Valley, north from Hobart, situated at the point where the River Derwent starts to widen substantially. New Norfolk was originally called Elizabeth Town but was re-named by Norfolk Island settlers after they abandoned the isolated island in the early 1800's.
This is another quaint and charming (with an English feel) Tasmanian town with many heritage status buildings. The waterside setting provides scenic walks but the sedate surroundings are contrasted by some of the more active tourist pursuits which include jet boating and water skiing on the Derwent River.
New Norfolk and the surrounding area has produced hops for over 100 years and today the majority of the hops used in Tasmanian beer production comes from here. Tasmania beer has a deserved reputation throughout Australia and overseas. Well known beer producers include Cascade, James Boags and Hazards (although they are not all based in the same region).
There is much to see and do, including visiting the Derwent Valley Railway, tours of some of the heritage properties, and the local paper mill, art galleries, museums, golf and gardens. There is a good selection of accommodation, with some luxuriously converted historic properties.
The various Spirit Of Tasmania ships cross between mainland Australia (Melbourne and Sydney) and Devonport, Tasmania. Please see the following links to book Melbourne to Devonport crossings:
