Pilbara Administrative Centre

Karratha is the administrative centre of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is 950 miles north of Perth, 430 miles south of Broome and 240 km south west of Port Hedland. Although there has been a settlement on the site for over one hundred years it has only been in existence for a couple of decades as a recognised town. See Karratha Region Map

Karratha has many of the best shopping and facilities outside Perth and the towns economy is principally built on offshore gas supplies and iron ore deposits. Light aircraft, boat and fishing charters can all be taken from the town and to the south is the Millstream Chichester National Park.

North West Shelf Project

Karratha is an important base for the North West Shelf Venture because it is the largest oil and gas production project in Australia. Several companies are involved including Woodside, Shell, BHP, BP, Chevron and Japan Australia LNG. The project includes an onshore plant producing gas, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gases and natural gas condensate for the Australian market and for export to Japan, Spain, Korea and the US .
