Innisfail Overview
Innisfail is 90 Km south of the more popular tourist destination of Cairns but it is more than another roadside stop.
The town is thriving thanks to sugar, tropical fruit, and even tea cultivation.
There are several unique and contrasting attractions here and of course access to The Great Barrier Reef.
Innisfail has a sizeable prawn fishing fleet and has a reputation as a good location for recreational fishing including barramundi and reef fishing.
Innisfail was hit severely by Cyclone Larry hit on March 20th 2006. Despite this the town demonstrated great resilience and is rebuilding after the devastation.
Biggest Banana Producer in Australia
Innisfail is the biggest producer of Bananas in Australia and also grows sugar cane and tropical fruits such as paw paw.
Visitors can tour both a tea plantation and also a crocodile farm. Innisfail is a well kept town with parks and gardens lining the Johnstone Rivers and providing relaxing places to sit or stroll in the tropical heat.
There are several beaches and National Parks within the vicinity.
Mission Beach
Innisfail is close to the famous idyllic Mission Beach.
The beach is unspoilt and popular with backpackers and tourists alike.
Their are a wide range of activities from beautiful bush walks to Sky Diving and White Water Rafting.
