Capital of Tasmania

Second Oldest City in Australia

Hobart's most famous resident of recent times is Mary Donaldson, now the Crown Princess of Denmark when she married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. Princess Mary actually hails from Taroona which is a small suburb some six miles from Hobart.

Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, the second oldest and most southerly city in Australia, see map. Hobart is located on the south east of the island of Tasmania, on the banks of the River Derwent and is dominated by Mount Wellington which looms above the city.

See Hobart Region Map.

Like many other Australian capitals Hobart is built on a natural port, which in this case is formed as the Derwent expands and exits to the Tasman Sea. Hobart is a popular tourist destination with a good selection of accommodation and with the introduction of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry route from Sydney, Tasmania is now more accessible than ever.

Heritage Listed Buildings

You could be forgiven for thinking Hobart was a typical British harbour or fishing town as it has the most well preserved colonial heritage listed buildings in Australia. Hobart is built on east and west banks of the Derwent and the Tasman Bridge spans the river, linking the banks.

The city has all the hustle and bustle one would expect from a working fishing port, not to mention ample opportunity to try the excellent fresh seafood. There are many parks, gardens and trees adding to the illusion that you are in part of Britain.

Salamanca Place

Like The Rocks in Sydney, Salamanca Place is a lively, waterside congregation of old sandstone waterside warehouses, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and galleries. The weekend open-air market is a must and offers the famed Tasmanian food produce, such as gorgeous cheeses or salmon as well as crafts and flowers.

Nautical Links

Hobart has a strong association with the sea. As well as the aforementioned working fishing fleet, the city is the destination for super yachts competing in the famous Sydney To Hobart Race. The race starts on Boxing Day and Constitution Dock is a hive of activity which increases as the yachts complete the race, usually in two or three days.

Hobart is also the home port for the Australian Antarctic survey vessel 'Aurora Australis' and the location for the biannual Australian Wooden Boat Festival. The bustling festival features music, plays, stalls with a backdrop of over 300 magnificent wooden boats including several 'Tall Ships'. The festival will be held next in 2005.

Spirit Of Tasmania

The various Spirit Of Tasmania ships cross between mainland Australia (Melbourne and Sydney) and Devonport, Tasmania. Please see the following links to book Melbourne to Devonport crossings:
