George Town was the location for the third European settlement in Australia when the HMS Buffalo landed in 1804. It took until 1811 to establish the first permanent settlement and George Town was at one stage Tasmania 's northern centre, not Launceston. George Town is at the head of the river Tamar and 50km to the south, at the tip of the river, is Launceston which is the northern regional centre. A monument dedicated to the landing site of the HMS Buffalo has been erected on George Town Esplanade.
George Town is also near the award winning Pipers River wine region. The cool temperate climate found in this region of Tasmania is ideal for grape cultivation which has resulted in a thriving wine industry. Wineries such as the 'Bay of Fires', 'Silk Hill', 'Holm Oak', 'Meadowbank Estate' and Delamere have cellar doors where the wine can be sampled and purchased.
