Esperance Overview
Esperance is 730 km ( 450 miles ) south east of Perth and is set in another of Australia's stunning and vividly coloured locations which in this case is the beautiful Esperance Bay, opposite the Archipelago of the Recherche.
Recherche Archipelago
The archipelago is the setting for over one hundred islands, some of which can be explored on excursions from the mainland.
Daily cruises on high speed catamarans depart to Mackenzies Island and Woody Island.
During the cruises you may spot seals, Sea Eagles and dolphins.
There is overnight camping available at Woody Island and accommodation is in safari style huts.
None, however, are developed with full holiday resorts a la Whitsunday Islands.
Some islands also are home to seals and whales can be spotted when they pass on their annual migration during the Australian Spring.
Great Ocean Drive
The Esperance coast has several breathtaking coves and beaches and more magnificent coastal national parks.
Nearby, there is another of Australia's' Great Ocean Drives which has around 25 miles of majestic coastal scenery overlooking the Southern Ocean and also taking in the unique 'Pink Lake'.
National Parks
The Esperance region has a surprising variety of national parks.
To the east are Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Parks and to the west are Stokes, Peak Charles , Fitzgerald River and Frank Hann parks.
The parks are a mixture of coastal scenery, secluded bays, white beaches, salt lakes and soaring granite peaks.
The famous Western Australian wildflowers and fauna produce stunning floral displays especially in the spring. Camping is permitted in Fitzgerald River, Cape Le Grand and Stokes Parks.
Esperance has a good selection of accommodation, a nearby winery, heritage village museum and the wonderful Old Jetty with its views over to the distant Archipelago.
Tours in all wheel drive buses take sightseers along the beaches, coastal roads and through the various national parks in the area.
