Dubbo Region Overview
Dubbo meaning "Red Earth" is located 260 miles North West of Sydney and midway between Melbourne and Brisbane on the Newell Highway.
Regarded by many as the Capital of Inland NSW, Dubbo combines the warmth and friendliness of a country town with the style and convenience of a modern city.
Dubbo is home to the famous "Western Plains Zoo"
The Western Plains Zoo
At over 300 ha, The Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo is the largest open range zoo in Australia.
The zoo houses more than 1000 animals, including some endangered species, in five themed areas: Africa, Asia, North America, South America and Australia.
Unlike conventional zoos where animals are enclosed in relatively small enclosures, the Western Plains Zoo provides extensive habitats allowing the animals to live in extremely natural environments.
Concealed water filled and dry moats safely isolate the animals but allow visitors to get as close as possible.
A visit to this extensive zoo is really unlike any other zoo experience you may have had before and is almost akin to a real safari.
An 18 Km circular track encompasses the animals’ simulated natural habitat which can be toured either on foot by special Zoo Buggy, bicycle or by car and the Tracker Riley Cycleway links the centre of Dubbo with the Zoo.
Watch Boomerangs being Made
Dubbo offers a range of activities, from watching how boomerangs are made at Jedda Boomerangs, making your own pot from start to finish to visiting the old Gaol.
See the Wellington Phosphate mine and caves, or indulge in a spot of golf. The great climate and clean air combined with genuine country hospitality, makes this vibrant diverse city well worth a visit.
