Cunnamulla is located by the Warrego River and was a major centre at the junction of two major stock routes involved in the transportation and management of livestock, predominantly sheep.

In the late 1800's Cunnamulla had the largest sheep shearing shed in the world with over 100 stands.

Paddle steamers used to transport sheep fleeces to the coast.

Opals

West of Cunnamulla is opal country, and the week-long Cunnamulla - Eulo Festival of Opals is held each August. The Eulo and Yowah Opal areas are in the region and are famed for the Mosaic Opal.

The Robbers Tree

Cunnamulla has a rich and colourful history and one of its claims to fame is that a robbery committed there resulted in the last hanging for armed robbery in Queensland.

The perpetrator, one Joseph Wells, robbed the Queensland National Bank and decided to hide in a Pine tree - aptly named The Robbers Tree. Unfortunately, for Joseph Wells, his loyal dog revealed his location when he sat by the tree waiting for his master.

Location

Cunnamulla is located in southern mid outback Queensland and has a latitude of 28.0°S and a longitude of 145.7° E.
