Coolgardie, a former gold town with an illustrious past was a boom town in the heady days of the Gold Rush of the 1890's and early 1900's. Like the Victorian towns of Ballarat and Bendigo there are some magnificent historical buildings erected in the good times when it seemed the gold would last forever. Coolgardie is 570 km ( 350 miles ) east of Perth.
Although gold is still mined in the locality it is only the big multinationals which have the resources and expertise to extract it economically. This town has many fascinating reminders of the former days of the gold rush with museums and exhibitions depicting the prospectors equipment and methods.
The much larger and still prosperous gold centre of Kalgoorlie lies 40 km ( 25 miles ) further east. There is a limited but good variety amount of accommodation in the town.
Perth is a popular international tourist destination and its west coast location often makes it the first or last port of call in Australia. A selection of accommodation in Perth is shown below. For a full list please visit our Perth Hotels page.
