Cloncurry Overview
Cloncurry is situated in the Gulf Savannah at the junction of the Flinders and Landsborough Highways, approx 1800 Km north west of Brisbane.
The town is a cattle rearing and an important copper mining centre.
Although the present mining operations are booming there are many relics and reminders of old mines including the remains of The Great Australian Mines and Treatment Plant.
Mary Kathleen
There is also one of the most extensive collections of minerals in Australia at Mary Kathleen Park.
The Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine, between Cloncurry and Mt Isa, was discovered in 1954 and named after the wife of one of the prospectors who discovered the 'Yellow Cake' deposits.
She had actually died of cancer a few weeks before the uranium mine was discovered.
Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine was mined in various forms until 1982 and was rehabilitated in 1985 to minimise the environmental impact.
