Pearl Of The North West

The Bungle Bungles are unique striped dome shape sandstone rock formations situated in the Purnalulu National Park. They were formed hundreds of millions of years ago by persistent and heavy rain erosion.

See Kimberley Region map

The Bungle Bungles were only discovered fairly recently when a pilot reported seeing some unusual rock formations. He told his story and  word quickly spread. Today they are visited by thousands of visitors annually. Now they are the one of the prides of Western Australia Tourism and heavily featured in their international advertising.

Organised Tours

The Bungle Bungles are becoming increasingly well known and sought out which is quite surprising considering they lie in one of the most remote and often inaccessible parts of north west Australia. Several air tour and 4WD operators cover the park and they are based in Broome, Halls Creek, Wyndham and several other Kimberley towns. For the majority of people such is their remoteness that an organised tour is the only safe and practical way to see them.

It should be noted that this is rugged country and non 4WD vehicles will be totally inadequate. Independent visitors should notify authorities and take supplies, particularly water as this is an unpopulated, remote area. The Purnalulu National Park is closed during the wet season, which usually extends from January to April. The rains are still at work carving their masterpiece. This region is nearly 2000 miles north east of Perth.
