Bundaberg Overview
Bundaberg, 220 miles north of Brisbane up the Bruce Highway, is most famous for its Rum (a product of local sugar cane production) which is enjoyed all over the world.
The fascinating daily tours of the distillery starts with sticky molasses being mixed with yeast and water and ends up with the double fermented rum.
The tour ends with the opportunity (or two) to taste the end product, the famous 'Bundy Rum' in the bar. The Bundaberg Distillery Tour is needless to say, extremely popular.
The Great Barrier Reef
Bundaberg is at the southern most point of the Great Barrier Reef which stretched northwards for over 3000km up past the tip of cape York.
This is a less frequently visited part of The Great Barrier Reef but there are coral cays ( Lady Musgrove and Lady Elliot Islands) , pristine lagoons and white sandy beaches to explore.
Bundaberg is also ideally placed to view whales during August to October.
However from November to March you may also be fortunate to see Giant Turtles at Mon Repos Beach, the largest Australian mainland turtle hatchery, as they make their way up the sand to lay their eggs.
Water Sports
The Burnett River, which divides the town, is lined with parks and is popular for a host of water sports and activities.
There is much to see and do in the region including a zoo, beautiful beaches ( some which allow 4WD access) and mysterious 25 million years old craters; probably the result of a meteorite impact.
