Borroloola is situated at the end of the Carpentaria Highway, 1000 Km (~600 miles) south east of Darwin. The town is situated amongst the intertwined river systems which are the link with the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Ocean. (see Map) The area is popular for fishing and sightseeing tours of the coastal islands with several tour operators providing excursions.
Barramundi can be found in the rivers including the McArthur, Limmen and Robinson and also fishing trips can be organised to the coastal islands around Borroloola. There is an increasing amount of tourist infrastructure although not on the scale of say Darwin or Alice Springs.
Travelling in this region can be hazardous as roads, which also may be unsealed, can be cut off depending on the time of year.
The town is near to the sandstone Bukulara Rock Formations and close to the Sir Edward Pellow Group of islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Of these the Barranyi National Park on North Island is accessible. Most of the 'Top End' is best viewed from the air and there are many aviation companies sprinkled over the region which can provide this service.
Borroloola is situated within the Narwinbi Aboriginal Land Trust. For any of the Aboriginal Land Trusts, permits are required (which can be hard to obtain for the casual visitor) if venturing off public roads which pass through the zone.
Throughout the Northern Territory, distances between townships or settlements can be great and there are vast tracts of largely un populated land which may require permission from Aboriginal Land Authorities to access.
Travel through the Northern Territory should be treated with the utmost respect. Careful preparation must be made if you are thinking of venturing out alone as people have been known to succumb to the conditions in just a few hours. In addition, during the monsoon season, some roads throughout the 'Top End are often made unpassable by flooding.
