Albury Wodonga Overview
Albury-Wodonga is situated on the Hume Highway on the NSW-Victorian border and is a popular stop-over for visitors travelling between Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
For many Australians however it is a location of choice to spend a vacation. It's not difficult to understand why since the area has a lot to offer.
The Mighty Murray River
One of Australia's national treasures, the mighty Murray River, flows between Albury and Wodonga. It provides excellent fishing, can be toured on a luxurious paddle steamer or house-boat or, if you are game enough, tackled by white water raft or canoe.
The source of the Murray River is in The Australian Alps near Corryong and it flows through Lake Hume, Albury Wodonga and onward for over 2000 km.
The Murray-Darling River system is the longest in Australia at almost 3400km.
The Murray forms the state border between New South Wales and Victoria (hence the reason why Wodonga is in Victoria and Albury is in New South Wales) and flows several hundred km into South Australia, contributing to the city of Adelaide's water supply.
Lake Hume
Albury Wodonga is 15km east of the awesome Lake Hume which is fed by the Murray and overlooked by mountain tops.
Lake Hume is one of the largest dams in the Southern Hemisphere with a capacity several times greater than Sydney Harbour.
Water is fed through hydroelectric turbines to generate electricity and water is also supplied to irrigation systems. With such a vast lake, leisure and recreation opportunities are plentiful including fishing, walking tracks , camp sites, swimming, water skiing and other water sports.
Skiing and Horse Riding
Albury Wodonga region has a well developed tourist industry and as well as the Murray River, in the area there are opportunities for walking, skiing, hang gliding, horse riding, mountain biking, hot air ballooning, mountaineering, caving, sky diving, golf and much more.
Trek through the nearby Victorian Alps or if it is winter ski them instead at Falls Creek or Mount Hotham.
