Adelaide River is a small town, with a population of a few hundred, 115 Km (70 miles) south of Darwin. To the north of the town is the Adelaide River Australian Military Cemetery dedicated to the lives lost in the Second World War.
The Adelaide River flows and divides in two near the town. There is a small amount of accommodation in the town.

To the west is the pretty Litchfield National Park with its waterfalls, unique rock formations and the precisely sited termite mounds.
The extraordinary Magnetic Termite Mounds are exactly aligned along the North South longitude so the east and western sides are directed towards the afternoon and morning sun light. An information area explains these clever constructions and a board walk allows good viewing opportunities without disturbing the termites.
Litchfield National Park is the most popular national park in the Darwin region and attracts over a quarter of a million visitors a year.
The park is around 2 hours drive from Darwin and is more gentle than the rugged brutal nature of say Kakadu. Of note are the Florence Falls which has a split stream which forms two falls, almost at right angles to each other, cascading into a pool below.
Other waterfalls in the Litchfield National Park include the Wangi, The Tjaynera or Sandy Creek and Tolmer Falls. The Wangi Falls descend from a red coloured cliff face into a plunge pool below-this is a popular place for visitors cool off and to relax under the canopy of palm trees.
Throughout the Northern Territory, distances between townships or settlements can be great and there are vast tracts of largely un populated land which may require permission from Aboriginal Land Authorities to access.
Travel through the Northern Territory should be treated with the utmost respect. Careful preparation must be made if you are thinking of venturing out alone as people have been known to succumb to the conditions in just a few hours. In addition, during the monsoon season, some roads throughout the 'Top End are often made unpassable by flooding.
